Gamers to rally in New York, but may be missing the point

In the last few days, news outlets of all shapes and sizes have been covering the terrible tragedy of the Virginia Tech shootings. The horrific event has a seemingly infinite number of outlets, from national networks to modest blogs, reacting and commenting in one fashion or another. Everyone has an opinion about the situation, and many have been very vocal in discussing the matter—especially when it comes to assigning blame.

Specifically to us gamers, a few spotlighted voices have come to condemn our chosen pastime as the usual source of these violent outbursts. Jack Thompson was first on the scene, followed later by Dr. Phil and a variety of other critics. As a result of their high-profile comments, the mass media began exploring the possibility of a gaming link. Serial broadcasts, features, and interviews all poised a proverbial gavel over the pedestal on the case of gaming's influence on violence.

Tune in, catch up on Betty's bit of Queens and Manhattan

"The Beautiful World of Ugly Betty" (8 p.m., WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, ABC). Haute couture clip job. To avoid yet another annoying rerun, the folks at ABC offer this recap of the season so far. So welcome to Betty Suarez's (America Ferrera) fashionable Mode magazine world, where babe magnet publisher Daniel Meade's (Eric Mabius) sweet assistant in braces has to cope with snarky coworkers. They have no clue how cool she can be

Immunity anyone?

"Survivor: Fiji" (8 p.m., WWJ-TV, Channel 62, CBS). Feeling the urge to merge? The remaining nine castaways are joined in conniving, alliance-altering anxiety. Especially when Mookie informs Dreamz that he found the second Hidden Immunity Idol. Holy tribal council!

Karma comedian?

Ratatat Raw

If Brooklyn had a wrestling team competing in what was formerly known as WWF's "Monday Night Raw" (now WWE's "Raw," which doesn't sound as cool), Ratatat would provide its entry music. This electronic-melodic, instrumental duo has an epic sound that resonated throughout Webster Hall last night. Only a trio of musicians—Mike Stroud, Evan Mast and an additional keyboardist—set up shop onstage during the performance, but the songs that emerged had this heroic, larger-than-life appeal. Tunes from Classics dominated the set, and the sold out crowd acted as if its collective mind were actually being blown each time Stroud and Mast kicked into a new beat. Stroud hunched over his guitar all night, looking like he'd just crawled out of a cave; his shaggy mop of shoulder-length, dark hair flipped in front of his face and shrouded what his beard didn't already cover.

'Blackbird' flies high

Its 8:01pm. The first line of dialogue has barely been delivered, but the plot is already in full swing, and the characters are unmistakably tense. In literary terms, this technique is known as in media res or in the middle of events. When used effectively in a drama, it has the power to capture an audiences attention from the start and maintain it till the bitter end.

Not since Doubt has The Manhattan Theater Club premiered a play so dramatically effective as Blackbird, David Harrowers uncompromising two-actor, 90-minute drama depicting a chance encounter between a young woman and the middle-aged man who raped her as a child. The play arrives Off-Broadway with a heap of prestige, having already been a hit in London and recently winning the 2007 Olivier for Best New Play.
